MADRID One week after toxic waste poured from a mine reservoir in southern Spain, authorities vowed on Saturday to mount a massive clean-up effort to prevent further damage from one of the country's worst ecological disasters. Government officials said the owner of the mine, Canadian-Swedish conglomerate Boliden Ltd. to, pledged in meetings on Friday to pay for removal of contaminated mud, buy up poisoned crops and create an emergency fund for farmers.

But Boliden spokesman Jim Borland said that while the company would honor its responsibilities to aid in recovery efforts, no specifics have been promised. (Reuter)
